Lortab Withdrawal

Lortab combines a narcotic analgesic (painkiller) and cough reliever with a non-narcotic analgesic for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. Individuals develop an addiction to Lortab because it produces feelings of well-being. Once an individual has developed an addiction to Lortab they will often get multiple prescriptions from different doctors to support their addiction. Lortab activates the brain’s reward systems. The promise of reward is very intense, causing the individual to crave more Lortab and to focus his or her activities around taking the drug. The ability of Lortab to strongly activate brain reward mechanisms and its ability to chemically alter the normal functioning of these systems is what produces an addiction to Lortab. Lortab also reduce a person’s level of consciousness, harming the ability to think or be fully aware of present surroundings.

If a regular user stops taking Lortab, he or she will experience Lortab withdrawal symptoms within six to twelve hours but the symptoms are usually not life-threatening. Initial withdrawal symptoms usually begin with hours of the last dose of Lortab and may include: cravings, running nose, excessive sweating, insomnia, and violent yawning. Those who have been addicted to Lortab for a long time, may progress to severe withdrawal symptoms, including: chills, fever, muscle spasms, abdominal pain, seizures, and even fall into a coma. The intensity of an individuals Lortab withdrawal symptoms depends on the degree of the individuals addiction to Lortab. For example, the symptoms of withdrawal from Lortab may grow stronger for twenty-four to seventy-two hours and then gradually decline over a period of seven to fourteen days. Cessation of Lortab is best accomplished at a drug rehabilitation center, where Lortab withdrawal can be managed. Assisted Lortab withdrawal is safer and also increases the chance that an individual will "come off" a Lortab.

Lortab withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • intense cravings for the drug
  • irritability
  • nausea or vomiting
  • muscle aches
  • runny nose or eyes
  • dilated pupils
  • sweating
  • diarrhea
  • yawning
  • fevers
